The lilting, lyric melody of section A of this ABA form waltz expresses the huge loneliness and sadness the composer felt as a grieving eleven-year-old child after her older and only sister died. Section B employs the diminished scale (whole step, half step, whole step, half, etc. or vice versa) with a moving eighth note left hand accompaniment to express even greater turmoil.
